Washington, DC (June 12, 2017) – Venable LLP announced today that Jeremy A. Grant has joined the firm as Managing Director of Technology Business Strategy in Washington, DC. He joins Venable's cybersecurity consulting practice from The Chertoff Group, where he was a Managing Director.

Prior to working with The Chertoff Group, Mr. Grant established and led the National Program Office for the National Strategy for Trusted Identities in Cyberspace (NSTIC), housed in the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST); NSTIC was the first new cybersecurity program launched by the Obama administration. There he led the administration’s push to partner with the private sector to catalyze a marketplace of more secure, privacy-enhancing identity solutions for online services. He coordinated development of a common shared identity service for citizen-facing government digital applications and helped establish the private sector–led Identity Ecosystem Steering Group, which has crafted a framework of standards and rules to enable a trusted online environment that can validate the identities of individuals securely with minimal disclosure of personal information. He also led efforts to improve identity and authentication for individuals and devices in the NIST Roadmap for Improving Critical Infrastructure Cybersecurity.

"The issue of cybersecurity persists as an ongoing threat confronting all of our clients," said Stuart P. Ingis, Venable's Chairman and co-head of the firm's Privacy and Data Security practice. "From his time with the Obama administration, Jeremy understands the importance of bringing the public and private sectors together to address this constantly evolving issue. He is thoughtful and effective in his approach to complex issues, and well versed in helping companies leverage technology to benefit their customers. His deep background in cybersecurity and business strategy will be a critical asset for our clients."

Commenting on his move, Mr. Grant said, "Today, companies must look at cybersecurity not just as a risk issue, but as a strategic issue – embracing both technology and cyber risk management to gain competitive advantage in the marketplace. I'm thrilled to join a firm that so skillfully combines the strengths of industry leading attorneys with those of innovators, former regulators, and cyber professionals – Venable offers businesses a truly holistic approach to cybersecurity strategy. I’m looking forward to working with the team to continue building this consultancy practice."

Before joining the Obama administration, Mr. Grant was the Chief Development Officer for government services consulting firm ASI Government. He spent three years with Washington Research Group as a market analyst focused on identity, cybersecurity, and government technology. Earlier in his career, he served as Vice President for Enterprise Solutions at MAXIMUS, where he led the division's Security and Identity Management practice, playing a major role in a number of major federal identity and security programs. Mr. Grant began his career as a legislative aide in the U.S. Senate.

At Venable, Mr. Grant joins a growing cybersecurity consulting practice led by former Special Assistant to President Obama and Senior Director for Cybersecurity Ari Schwartz, Venable's Managing Director of Cybersecurity Services. The group also includes Senior Director for Technology Risk Management John Banghart, Microsoft's former Senior Director for Trusted Engineering and former Director of Federal Cybersecurity at the National Security Council.

Mr. Grant earned his B.S. from the University of Michigan in 1996.
