A January 17, 2014 newsletter, Exempt Organizations Tax Journal (EOTJ), featured a letter written by Venable associate Matt Journy to EOTJ about Venable’s pro bono efforts on behalf of Anacostia Playhouse. Attorneys in Venable’s nonprofit group reached out to Anacostia Playhouse after EOTJ reprinted an article from Washington City Paper in September 2013 about how the organization was facing excessive delays in trying to obtain tax-exempt status recognition from the IRS.

Venable offered to file a petition for declaratory judgment in Tax Court on a pro bono basis, after which Anacostia Playhouse finally received its 501(c)(3) status on January 2, 2014 – 77 days after the petition had been filed, and approximately 500 days after the initial application was filed.

Venable attorneys Matt Journy, Janice Ryan, Kristalyn Loson and George Constantine represented Anacostia Playhouse.
