Hilary Atzrott Hamburg

Hilary Atzrott Hamburg, New York Co-Hiring Partner

"When I think about what makes Venable such a great place to practice law, three things stand out: the quality of work, the support for professional growth, and the strength of our community.

At Venable, I’ve had the opportunity to work on sophisticated real estate transactions—navigating New York City’s complex land use and zoning processes, structuring major acquisitions, and negotiating development agreements. The firm’s collaborative culture means I’m constantly learning from talented colleagues across practices, which strengthens our ability to deliver creative solutions for clients while continuing my professional growth.

What truly sets Venable apart is its investment in its people. Through leadership opportunities, mentorship, and a deeply supportive network, the firm fosters an environment where growth is encouraged, and success is shared.

If you're considering new opportunities, I’d be happy to share more about why Venable has been such a rewarding place for me."

Zachary Garrett, New York Co-Hiring Partner

"One of the things that makes Venable's Summer Program so special is the mentorship—both formal and informal—that happens every day. As a summer associate, you're not just observing; you're actively working with experienced attorneys who take the time to teach, support, and guide you. Whether it’s receiving direct feedback on an assignment, grabbing lunch with a partner who shares insights about their practice, or connecting with associates who were in your shoes just a few years ago, the mentorship here is genuine and invaluable.

Another key aspect of the program is the opportunity to explore different practice areas. We encourage our summer associates to take on projects across multiple groups, helping them gain firsthand exposure to different types of work and determine where they might thrive. In my own practice, which focuses on patent litigation in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries, our cases often involve highly technical and strategic challenges. Through the summer program, those interested in intellectual property law get the chance to work on real matters—whether it’s researching key issues in a patent dispute, assisting with litigation strategy, or working with scientific experts whose insights could turn the tide in a case."

"One of the things I value most about practicing at Venable is the opportunity I have to handle sophisticated, high-stakes litigation while being part of a collaborative and forward-thinking team. Over the years, I’ve led complex patent litigation cases across a broad range of industries—from medical and computer devices to cutting-edge agricultural biotechnology—securing key wins for both plaintiffs and defendants. Venable provides both the resources and support to achieve such career opportunities, and our culture of excellence means I’m doing so alongside talented colleagues who push me to my best-self every day.

As you embark on your journey toward a fulfilling legal career, I invite you to consider joining our firm, where ambition meets opportunity in an environment designed to nurture growth, collaboration, and excellence. At Venable, we pride ourselves on our collegial and supportive culture. Here, you will find a team of professionals who are not just colleagues but allies in your success—ready to share insights, extend a helping hand, and celebrate milestones together. We believe that a thriving legal career starts with a strong foundation built on teamwork, respect, and shared values.

Our summer program is a shining example of this ethos. With a personal touch and high engagement at its core, it mirrors the day-to-day experience of life as a junior associate. You will gain firsthand exposure to meaningful work, client interactions, and the dynamic rhythm of practice, all while being guided by mentors who are committed to your development. This immersive experience ensures that you leave the summer with confidence, skills, and connections that will empower your next steps.

Beyond the summer, our career development program is unparalleled. We offer tailored training, mentorship, and resources to help you carve out your unique path in the legal field. Whether your goals lie in mastering complex litigation like me, or navigating corporate transactions or shaping policy, we are here to support you. With a realistic and transparent path to promotion, you will find clarity and purpose as you grow with us—knowing that your aspirations align with the firm’s vision.

Venable is not just a place to work; it is a place to thrive. We are excited about the prospect of bringing on talented law students and lawyers who are ready to make an impact, and we hope you will consider joining us in this exciting journey. Summer Associate Program
+

Venable's Summer Associate Program is a very important source for associate hiring. Our program is designed to give summer associates a realistic depiction of what everyday life is like as a junior associate. We currently have summer programs in our Baltimore, Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, San Francisco, Tysons Corner, and Washington, DC offices.

Assignments

Summer associates receive real work assignments on behalf of real clients—the same type of assignments our junior associates receive throughout the year. Assignments range from research and memos to presentations for a client, from rush assignments to ongoing projects.

Although each office has a slightly different assignment process, we make sure our summer associates receive work in the practice areas that are of interest to them. We do not do a formal rotation, which allows our summer associates to explore various practice areas of their choosing. In addition to work assignments, we encourage participation in "take-alongs," which can include attending hearings, spending the day in court, or sitting in on a transaction closing.

Feedback

Upon the completion of each assignment, summer associates are evaluated by the assigning attorney. In addition, a partner member of the local office hiring committee meets with each summer associate for a midsummer and end-of-summer review.

Social Events

Venable strives to maintain a balance between work and social events for the duration of the summer program. Informal dinners, happy hours, and lunches are some of the best ways for the summer associates to get to know our attorneys. In addition, we host a number of formal events, which vary by office.

Take a Partner to Lunch

The "Take a Partner to Lunch" program encourages summer associates to spend time with partners whose practice areas are of particular interest to the summer associate. Get to know experienced lawyers and enjoy lunch on us.

How to Apply
+

Venable seeks qualified law students whose personal and academic achievements demonstrate a commitment to excellence. These bright, highly motivated individuals will have the opportunity for interesting work in a collegial environment that promotes learning and professional growth. Whether you are a law student looking for a summer position or an entry-level associate looking for a place to begin your legal career, we invite you to take a closer look at our firm.

Second and third year students currently enrolled at a law school where we conduct on-campus interviews should apply through their law school’s career placement office. If we are not visiting your school campus, please apply directly. While the majority of our class comes from our OCI process, we welcome write-in applications as well.

The Interview Process

A candidate should submit their resume, transcripts and cover letter through their career services office or directly through our Open Positions. If there is not an open position matching your desired role, please submit your materials to the proper legal recruiting contact for the office in which you are interested.

Screening interviews are held for qualified candidates either on campus or in the office. Eligible candidates may be invited for a call-back visit to meet with additional members of the firm.

If you are invited to the firm to interview, you will be contacted by our Professional Development & Recruiting Department to schedule a mutually convenient in-office interview. Call-back interviews generally last two to three hours, and, typically, you will meet with attorneys for approximately thirty minutes each. If you are interested in particular practice areas or have questions that may be best addressed by particular lawyers, please let us know and we will work hard to accommodate those requests.

If we invite you back to the office, we will reimburse you for interview expenses or share them with other firms. Reimbursable expenses may include airfare, train fare, ground transportation, and hotel accommodations, as well as mileage, tolls, and parking. We do not reimburse candidates for preliminary interviews.

Following your interview, your recruiter will let you know when you should expect to hear from us. The Hiring Committee makes an effort to get back to each candidate as quickly as possible.

We encourage candidates to contact their recruiter to schedule a return visit and indicate whether they would like to meet with lawyers in a specific practice area or from a specific diverse background.

If you have any questions about our opportunities or our application process, please contact the local office recruiter (see "Contacts" above).
