Venable's Summer Associate Program is a very important source for associate hiring. Our program is designed to give summer associates a realistic depiction of what everyday life is like as a junior associate. We currently have summer programs in our Baltimore, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Tysons, and Washington, DC offices.
Assignments
Summer associates receive real work assignments on behalf of real clients—the same type of assignments our junior associates receive throughout the year. Assignments range from research and memos to presentations for a client, from rush assignments to ongoing projects.
Although each office has a slightly different assignment process, we make sure our summer associates receive work in the practice areas that are of interest to them. We do not do a formal rotation, which allows our summer associates to explore various practice areas of their choosing. In addition to work assignments, we encourage participation in "take-alongs," which can include attending hearings, spending the day in court, or sitting in on a transaction closing.
Feedback
Upon the completion of each assignment, summer associates are evaluated by the assigning attorney. In addition, our hiring partner and recruitment team meets with each summer associate for a midsummer and end-of-summer review.
Social Events
Venable strives to maintain a balance between work and social events for the duration of the summer program. Informal dinners, happy hours, and lunches are some of the best ways for the summer associates to get to know our attorneys. In addition, we host a number of formal events, which vary by office.

The "Take a Lawyer to Lunch" program encourages summer associates to spend time with partners whose practice areas are of particular interest to the summer associate. Get to know experienced lawyers and enjoy lunch on us.
