Venable seeks qualified law students whose personal and academic achievements demonstrate a commitment to excellence. These bright, highly motivated individuals will have the opportunity for interesting work in a collegial environment that promotes learning and professional growth. Whether you are a law student looking for a summer position or an entry-level associate looking for a place to begin your legal career, we invite you to take a closer look at our firm.
Second and Third year students currently enrolled at a law school where we conduct on-campus interviews should apply through their law school's career placement office. If we are not visiting your school campus, please send your resume and transcripts to our Recruiting Department (see below for contact information). While a majority of our class comes from our OCI process, we do accept write-ins. These applications are generally considered from August 1 to December 31.
The Interview Process
A candidate should submit his or her resume, transcripts and cover letter through the career services office or to the proper legal recruiting contact for the office in which he or she is interested.
Screening interviews are held for qualified candidates either on campus or in the office. Eligible candidates may be invited for a call-back visit to meet with additional members of the firm.
If you are invited to the firm to interview, you will be contacted by our Professional Development & Recruiting Department to schedule a mutually convenient in-office interview. Call-back interviews generally last two to three hours, and, typically, you will meet with attorneys for approximately thirty minutes each. If you are interested in particular practice areas or have questions that may be best addressed by particular lawyers, please let us know and we will work hard to accommodate those requests.
If we invite you back to the office, we will reimburse you for interview expenses or share them with other firms. Reimbursable expenses may include airfare, train fare, ground transportation, and hotel accommodations, as well as mileage, tolls, and parking. We do not reimburse candidates for preliminary interviews.
Following your interview, your recruiter will let you know when you should expect to hear from us. The Hiring Committee makes an effort to get back to each candidate as quickly as possible.
We encourage candidates to contact their recruiter to schedule a return visit and indicate whether they would like to meet with lawyers in a specific practice area or from a specific diverse background.
1L LCLD Scholar Program
Venable is proud to be a member of the Leadership Council on Legal Diversity (LCLD) and is excited to host scholars in our Washington, Baltimore, New York, and Los Angeles offices. The 1L LCLD Scholars Program offers diverse law students who will have completed their first year of law school by May the opportunity to spend a summer working side by side with attorneys from LCLD member organizations.
Our 1L LCLD scholars will split their time between Venable and a corporate partner or spend the entirety of the summer program with one of our offices. Throughout the summer, scholars will receive real work assignments on behalf of real clients – the same type of assignments our junior associates receive throughout the year. Assignments range from research and formal memos to client presentations and rush assignments. In addition, scholars will participate in "take-alongs," which may include attending hearings, spending the day in court, or sitting in on a transaction closing. A ten-week commitment during the summer is required.
We maintain a balance between work and social events during the course of the summer program. Informal dinners, happy hours, and group outings are some of the best ways for scholars to get to know our attorneys. In addition, our "Take a Partner to Lunch" program encourages scholars to spend time with partners whose practice areas they find particularly interesting. Our goal is for scholars to end the summer with a wealth of new connections, mentors, and an accurate sense of what life is like as a first-year associate.
Applications can be submitted through our Legal Professional Opportunities section. Please include a resume, transcript, and cover letter.
