Venable's Summer Associate Program is a very important source for associate hiring. Our program is designed to give summer associates a realistic depiction of what everyday life is like as a junior associate. We currently have summer programs in our Baltimore, Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, San Francisco, Tysons Corner, and Washington, DC offices.

Assignments

Summer associates receive real work assignments on behalf of real clients—the same type of assignments our junior associates receive throughout the year. Assignments range from research and memos to presentations for a client, from rush assignments to ongoing projects.

Although each office has a slightly different assignment process, we make sure our summer associates receive work in the practice areas that are of interest to them. We do not do a formal rotation, which allows our summer associates to explore various practice areas of their choosing. In addition to work assignments, we encourage participation in "take-alongs," which can include attending hearings, spending the day in court, or sitting in on a transaction closing.

Feedback

Upon the completion of each assignment, summer associates are evaluated by the assigning attorney. In addition, a partner member of the local office hiring committee meets with each summer associate for a midsummer and end-of-summer review.

Social Events

Venable strives to maintain a balance between work and social events for the duration of the summer program. Informal dinners, happy hours, and lunches are some of the best ways for the summer associates to get to know our attorneys. In addition, we host a number of formal events, which vary by office.

Take a Partner to Lunch

The "Take a Partner to Lunch" program encourages summer associates to spend time with partners whose practice areas are of particular interest to the summer associate. Get to know experienced lawyers and enjoy lunch on us.

How to Apply
+

Venable seeks qualified law students whose personal and academic achievements demonstrate a commitment to excellence. These bright, highly motivated individuals will have the opportunity for interesting work in a collegial environment that promotes learning and professional growth. Whether you are a law student looking for a summer position or an entry-level associate looking for a place to begin your legal career, we invite you to take a closer look at our firm.

Second and third year students currently enrolled at a law school where we conduct on-campus interviews should apply through their law school’s career placement office. If we are not visiting your school campus, please apply directly. While the majority of our class comes from our OCI process, we welcome write-in applications as well.

The Interview Process

A candidate should submit their resume, transcripts and cover letter through their career services office or directly through our Open Positions. If there is not an open position matching your desired role, please submit your materials to the proper legal recruiting contact for the office in which you are interested.

Screening interviews are held for qualified candidates either on campus or in the office. Eligible candidates may be invited for a call-back visit to meet with additional members of the firm.

If you are invited to the firm to interview, you will be contacted by our Professional Development & Recruiting Department to schedule a mutually convenient in-office interview. Call-back interviews generally last two to three hours, and, typically, you will meet with attorneys for approximately thirty minutes each. If you are interested in particular practice areas or have questions that may be best addressed by particular lawyers, please let us know and we will work hard to accommodate those requests.

If we invite you back to the office, we will reimburse you for interview expenses or share them with other firms. Reimbursable expenses may include airfare, train fare, ground transportation, and hotel accommodations, as well as mileage, tolls, and parking. We do not reimburse candidates for preliminary interviews.

Following your interview, your recruiter will let you know when you should expect to hear from us. The Hiring Committee makes an effort to get back to each candidate as quickly as possible.

We encourage candidates to contact their recruiter to schedule a return visit and indicate whether they would like to meet with lawyers in a specific practice area or from a specific diverse background.

If you have any questions about our opportunities or our application process, please contact the local office recruiter:
