WASHINGTON (September 15, 2004) – In its first-ever ranking of top Washington attorneys, the Washington Business Journal selected four Venable LLP partners for its highest awards, more than any other firm. In addition, three other Venable attorneys were cited as runners up.
In the awards, partner William Dolan was named top Commercial Litigator. Partner Stef Tucker won in a tie in the Tax Law category. Partner Connie Bertram was named Employment Law “Young Gun.” Partner Jeffrey Tenenbaum was also cited as one of the top “Young Guns” in the District. Real Estate partner Phil Horowitz, Corporate Finance partner Elizabeth Hughes, and Intellectual Property partner George Pappas were also named as finalists in the awards.

The awards, which focus on lawyers who concentrate their practice in the Washington business community, were chosen by the editors at the Washington Business Journal. Venable’s winners were as follows:
- William Dolan, who works from the Virginia office, was awarded top honors in Commercial Litigation. Mr. Dolan, a past president of the Virginia State Bar, received notice for his work on high-profile cases.
- Stef Tucker, who “stands out from many attorneys in DC,” was honored as co-winner in the Tax Law category. Mr. Tucker’s specialty is advising entrepreneurs, business owners and executives.
- Connie Bertram was named as the winner of the Employment Law “Young Gun” award. Ms. Bertram, who was also recently selected as one of 12 leading Labor and Employment lawyers by Legal Times, represents clients in all areas of employment litigation. The Washington Business Journal took special note of her repeated victories in the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals.
- Jeffrey Tenenbaum won the “Young Guns” Award. Mr. Tenenbaum’s practice focuses exclusively on providing legal counseling to, and advocacy for, trade and professional associations and other nonprofit organizations. He is widely recognized as one of the nation’s leading association and nonprofit attorneys.
- Elizabeth Hughes was a finalist in the Corporate Finance field. Ms. Hughes has worked on a number of the top regional deals, including MBNA’s 1991 IPO. She was cited for her work in the technology arena, including the $450 million SafeNet acquisition of Rainbow Technologies.
- Phil Horowitz was a finalist in the Real Estate Transactions category. Mr. Horowitz, who is the vice president of the American College of Real Estate Lawyers, was noted for his work on the one-million square foot Securities and Exchange Commission headquarters at Station Place.
- George Pappas was a finalist in the Intellectual Property category. Mr. Pappas created the firm’s IP Litigation group and headed it though 1998. He has served as lead trial counsel for more than 80 patent cases.
