The significant rise in data breaches in recent years has become a top concern for anyone responsible for a nonprofit’s data security or its liability posture. This concern is well founded, as the devastating consequences of breaches and the diversity of affected organizations have demonstrated. Any entity that holds sensitive data, whether private sector, government, or nonprofit, must take steps to strengthen its security and be prepared to respond when a breach occurs. This process can be challenging even for the government, whose approach has been inconsistent. There is no uniform law on data security or data-breach notification at the federal level, and 47 states have enacted their own laws on data-breach notification.
This informative and timely program will be led by two Venable lawyers who understand the security and legal decisions that any nonprofit holding sensitive data will have to make. Our panelists will include the former general counsel of Network Solutions and the former lead advisor for cybersecurity issues to the Illinois Attorney General’s office and the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce.
