Washington, DC, May 7, 2002 . . . Venable is pleased to announce that Karen Guthrie King has joined Venable as a Senior Regulatory Advisor in the regulatory practice. At Venable, Ms. King will focus on legislative and regulatory matters for the firm's telecommunications clients.

Ms. King is the former Director of Government Affairs at the Personal Communications Industry Association (PCIA) representing the wireless infrastructure industry. At PCIA Ms. King represented the interests of the tower industry in securing the Nationwide Agreement for the Collocation of Wireless Antennas, which clarifies the Historic Preservation Act rules as they apply to the siting of antennas on or near historic properties. The agreement, signed in March 2001 by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), the National Conference of State Historic Preservation Officers (NCSHPO), and the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation (ACHP), will speed the process of collocation and grandfather existing tower structures, while protecting historic properties.

Prior to PCIA, Ms. King was a telecommunications specialist at the law firm of Manatt, Phelps, and Phillips, and spent 16 years in the telecommunications industry, including broadcast television, wireless telecommunications, cable television, and telephone. Ms. King was the Director of Government Relations for cable companies TCI and Starpower.

Ms. King is a member of the Federal Communications Bar Association and past president of the Illinois Chapter of the National Association of Telecommunications Offices and Advisors (NATOA).

Ms. King received a B.S. in Radio Television and a B.S. in Speech from Southern Illinois University and an M.A. in Telecommunications from Kent State University. She is currently working on her law degree at the University of Baltimore.
