WASHINGTON, D.C. (April 9, 2003) – NameProtect, Inc. (http://www.nameprotect.com), a leading trademark research and monitoring company, has named Venable LLP among the top trademark registration firms in the country in its annual awards publication. Venable filed 573 domestic trademarks in 2002, 14th among U.S. law firms overall and 6th among general practice firms. The firm jumped from a #23 overall ranking in 2001.
"We’re very happy with this additional recognition that, as a general practice law firm, the output of our trademark practice still ranks in the same league as specialty firms that limit their practice to intellectual property," said Mark B. Harrison, who chairs Venable’s trademark practice.
Mr. Harrison was individually recognized as the 6th most productive trademark attorney in the country for 2002, the result of 300 separate trademark filings last year, nearly one a day.
While NameProtect tracks only domestic trademarks, Mr. Harrison noted that Venable files and prosecutes trademarks in virtually every country that protects them as intellectual property. Venable guides clients through every stage of trademark prosecution, including representation before the Trademark Trial and Appeals Board if the process turns contentious because of a third-party challenge. In addition, Venable’s trademark lawyers and IP litigators provide counsel on protecting and exploiting the value of marks and represent their clients in both mediations and trials in federal court.
NameProtect is the latest IP industry source to recognize Venable’s trademark practice in the last two years:
- IP Today’s May 2002 issue ranked the firm in the top 20 for trademark registrations obtained in 2001.
- Legal Media Group’s World IP Survey in November 2002 ranked Venable among the top 25 firms in contentious trademark representation.
- IP Worldwide’s November 2002 issue called Venable one of the "Trademark Counsel for the Global 50" – a Who’s Who of firms representing the largest businesses in the world.
"We’ve done trademark work for nearly every imaginable business and nonprofit organization," Mr. Harrison said. Among the well-known brands Venable has helped establish and protect are Citizen watches, Melitta coffee filters and even the Yale University coat of arms. "Every organization that recognizes the power of its brand in commerce needs to think about protecting its mark," said Mr. Harrison.
Venable’s intellectual property practice has over 75 professionals working in patent prosecution, copyright, unfair trade, entertainment, trademarks, and IP litigation.
One of the American Lawyer’s top 100 law firms, Venable LLP has attorneys practicing in all areas of corporate and business law, complex litigation, intellectual property and government affairs. Venable serves corporate, institutional, governmental, nonprofit and individual clients throughout the U.S. and around the world from its headquarters in Washington, D.C. and offices in California, Maryland, New York and Virginia.
