Venable partner Ashley Craig was featured in an October 18, 2011 Journal of Commerce article on shipping losses sustained in the Rena accident. The Rena is a ship that hit a reef near New Zealand on October 5 and from which at least 80 containers of cargo have fallen since the accident.
Commenting on compensation from the accident, Craig said compensation “is based on the freight unit under the bill of lading and so may not be based on entire containers.” Craig added, “It’s common for shippers to push back against the application of the law if they believe the accident wasn’t caused by nature but human error.”
