Firm recognized in the Excellence Outside of the Beltway category at First Annual Best FCPA Lawyers Client Service Awards

Washington, DC (April 24, 2013) – Venable LLP is pleased to announce that its Foreign Corrupt Practices Act and Anti-Corruption Group was honored with a Distinguished Service Award by Main Justice.  The firm was one of five nationwide honored in the Excellence Outside the Beltway category at Main Justice’s First Annual Best FCPA Lawyers Client Service Awards.

The Client Service Awards highlight achievements of law firms and attorneys who demonstrated exceptional service representing companies and executives in FCPA and global anti-corruption matters during 2012.  Award winners were determined through a combination of interviews, law firm responses, and Main Justice’s daily reporting on FCPA matters.  In making its decision, Main Justice considered a number of factors including complexity of matters handled; outcomes; whether there were related issues such as export controls, anti-money laundering or antitrust; whether an attorney has conducted overseas investigations and the role played in those investigations; and how the attorneys and practice groups have helped to achieve cost savings for clients.

“We are honored to be recognized by Main Justice as a leader in this essential and important practice area.  Anti-corruption compliance and enforcement are of critical importance to our clients and to U.S. companies in general.  With FCPA enforcement and prosecutions a top priority of the Justice Department and the Securities and Exchange Commission, our group consistently focuses on helping clients remain compliant with the law and vigilant to potential issues.  We help clients navigate the complexities of the FCPA and non-U.S. anti-corruption regimes, such as the UK Bribery Act,” said Lindsay Meyer, Venable’s Co-Managing Partner and Co-Chair of the firm’s FCPA and Anti-Corruption Group.  “We approach these matters in a reasoned and measured manner, seeking an outcome tailored to the circumstances and the needs of our clients.  We frequently draw upon the vast industry-specific experience of other Venable attorneys, many of whom have significant FCPA and anti-corruption experience,” added group Co-Chair Jan Handzlik.  “The group has been a national leader on the compliance front partnering with Venable’s many practice groups, to bring anticorruption compliance to the forefront of their business planning,” said group Co-Chair William Devaney.

According to Main Justice publisher Dana-Megan Rossi, the Client Service Awards represent a significant shift in typical firm recognitions.  “We are leading the effort in the return to basics by wholly emphasizing well-rounded client service, and not just recycling the year’s biggest headlines,” Ms. Rossi said in a statement.  “Our recognitions will honor law firms and attorneys recommended for their ability to exhibit a high degree of professionalism, good judgment and zealous advocacy.”

Founded in 2009, Washington, DC-based Main Justice, a WDC Media LLC publication, focuses on the politics, policies and personalities of the U.S. Department of Justice and corporate law enforcement.  The Client Service Award winners were announced on April 23 at a ceremony at the Hotel Monaco in Washington, DC.
