Joe Schmelter cites government contractors among most active clients in National Law Journal interview

Venable partner Joe Schmelter was quoted in an April 29, 2013 National Law Journal article on the current state of the legal market in Northern Virginia. Legal practices focusing on intellectual property, government contracts and real estate are big business in the region.

While some firms in the region are struggling with the impact of sequestration and budget cuts, that has not been the case for Venable’s Tysons Corner office. According to Schmelter, business “has been anything but stagnant for us.” Government contractors have been among the most active clients for law firms lately due to industry concern over the federal budget. “It's been a very strong market for law firms that service that industry,” Schmelter said. “There are challenges ahead with the wars winding down overseas and the percentage of the budget spent on defense dwindling.”
