Margaret Strand Joins American College of Environmental Lawyers

Invitation only membership recognizes significant contributions to the field of environmental law


Washington, DC (June 10, 2013) – Venable LLP is pleased to announce that partner Margaret “Peggy” Strand has been elected to the American College of Environmental Lawyers (ACOEL). Ms. Strand joins a select group of 168 active members nationwide from private practice, government, NGOs and academia.

Membership into the ACOEL is by invitation only. Eligibility is limited to individuals who have had substantial experience in environmental law for not less than 15 years and whose professional activities have been at least 50% in the area of environmental law for the five years prior to nomination for membership. Ms. Strand was nominated by ACOEL members, vetted by the Membership Committee and endorsed by the organization’s current membership.

Green, chair of Venable’s Environmental Group. “She is a tireless advocate for her clients and a highly respected member of our group. We are very proud to see her professional achievements and commitment to the environment recognized by this prestigious organization.”

A member of Venable’s Environmental Practice Group who represents a wide range of public and private entities, Ms. Strand concentrates on counseling, government relations and litigation in environmental programs. She is well known for her work in federal wetlands law and environmental compliance; her clients range from mining to land development to major infrastructure.  Ms. Strand has substantial experience advising on the regulatory requirements of federal and state law, including natural resources, endangered species, clean water programs and pollution control.

Prior to joining Venable, Ms. Strand was Chief of the Environmental Defense Section in the U.S. Department of Justice, Environmental and Natural Resources Division, where she supervised attorneys conducting litigation involving the regulatory programs of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. She serves on the Executive Committee, Legal Resources of the Transportation Research Board of the National Academy of Sciences and is consistently ranked in Chambers USA, Best Lawyers in America, and Super Lawyers.

Formed in July 2007 by a group of environmental practitioners from around the country, the American College of Environmental Lawyers is a professional association of distinguished lawyers who practice in the field of environmental law. Members are dedicated to maintaining and improving the standards of practice, administration of justice, and ethics of the profession, and to contributing to the development of environmental law at both the state and federal level, as well as helping others in the field through sharing knowledge by writing, speaking, and teaching.
