Baltimore, MD (August 15, 2013) – Best Lawyers®, the oldest and most respected peer-review publication in the legal profession, has named Venable Co-Managing Partner Robert L. Waldman as the Non-Profit/Charities Law "Lawyer of the Year" in Baltimore. Additionally, Mr. Waldman was also recognized in the Employee Benefits (ERISA) Law and the Tax Law sections of the 2014 edition of The Best Lawyers in America© (Copyright 2013 by Woodward/White, Inc., of Aiken, SC). This is the eighth consecutive year Mr. Waldman has been recognized in The Best Lawyers in America©.

Best Lawyers® began designating “Lawyers of the Year” in the United States in high-profile legal practice areas in 2009. Only one attorney in each practice area and designated metropolitan area is honored as a “Lawyer of the Year,” making the recognition particularly significant. Attorneys named as a “Lawyer of the Year” are selected based on particularly impressive voting averages received during an exhaustive peer-review assessment conducted with thousands of leading attorneys each year. Receiving this honor reflects the high level of respect an attorney has earned from his/her peers in the same communities and the same practice areas for his/her abilities, professionalism and integrity.

In addition to serving as Venable’s Co-Managing Partner, Mr. Waldman also leads the firm's national representation of tax-exempt organizations. His practice includes general representation of numerous foundations, hospitals, educational institutions, trade associations and other charitable entities. He also practices extensively in the areas of philanthropic and estate planning, employee benefits and taxation. Mr. Waldman has been recognized in the past two editions of Legal 500 for Not-for-profit (non-profit and tax-exempt organizations) and was selected for inclusion in Maryland Super Lawyers, 2010 - 2013 editions. Mr. Waldman serves on numerous charity boards and is the past Chair of the Association of Baltimore Area Grantmakers.

Mr. Waldman was one of seven Venable attorneys named “Lawyers of the Year.” Also recognized were Bryson L. Cook, Baltimore Tax Law; William D. Dolan III, Washington, DC Litigation - Regulatory Enforcement (SEC, Telecom, Energy); Douglas H. Green, Washington, DC Environmental Law; James J. Hanks, Jr., Baltimore Corporate Law; Sharon A. Kroupa, Baltimore Corporate Governance Law; and Richard L. Wasserman, Baltimore Bankruptcy and Creditor Debtor Rights/Insolvency and Reorganization Law. Overall, Venable had a record 93 attorneys who achieved 159 placements across 47 practice groups in the latest edition of The Best Lawyers in America©.

For more than three decades, Best Lawyers® has earned the respect of the legal profession, the media, and the public, as the most reliable, unbiased source of legal referrals anywhere. The twentieth edition of The Best Lawyers in America© (2014) includes over 50,000 attorneys in 134 practice areas, compiled through exhaustive peer-review surveys in which tens of thousands of attorneys confidentially evaluate their peers. Inclusion in this year’s publication is based on more than 4.9 million detailed evaluations of attorneys by their peers.
