Honors Early- to Mid-Career Minority Attorneys in the Western Region

Los Angeles, CA (June 20, 2014) – Edward J. Loya, Jr., a Litigation Associate in Venable LLP’s Los Angeles Office, has been named to Lawyers of Color’s Second Annual Hot List, which recognizes early- to mid-career minority attorneys working as in-house counsel, government attorneys, and law firm associates and partners.

Honorees will be profiled in Lawyers of Color’s Hot List 2014 Issue (July 2014). The Western Region honorees will also be feted at a reception hosted by Morgan Lewis on July 23rd.

Mr. Loya is a member of Venable’s West Coast Commercial Litigation and Investigations and White Collar Defense Practice Groups. An accomplished and highly-regarded trial attorney, he has successfully conducted more than twenty criminal jury and bench trials in courts throughout the country. He focuses his practice on complex civil business litigation and represents companies and individuals in investigations, prosecutions, and regulatory matters nationwide. He has extensive experience conducting investigations in both English and Spanish.

Mr. Loya joined private practice after five years of government service as a public corruption prosecutor for the Public Integrity Section of the U.S. Department of Justice’s Criminal Division based in Washington, DC.  Mr. Loya has investigated and prosecuted elected, appointed, and career public officials at all levels of government (local, state, and federal), including cases involving allegations of corruption in the award of multi-million dollar defense contracts, police corruption, border corruption, and corruption and fraud relating to federal programs.  For his dedicated service, Mr. Loya received the Criminal Division’s Distinguished Service Award and the Justice Department’s Special Achievement Award, as well as recognition from various law enforcement agencies.

Mr. Loya previously served as a law clerk to U.S. Circuit Judge Harris L Hartz of the Tenth Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals and to U.S. District Judge S. James Otero of the Central District of California.  While in law school, he externed for U.S. Circuit Judge Alex Kozinski, now Chief Judge, of the Ninth Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals.

Mr. Loya maintains a pro bono practice focused on serving individuals from disadvantaged communities in Southern California and promoting the advancement of the U.S. Hispanic business community in all sectors of the U.S. economy.

Mr. Loya is a graduate of Stanford Law School, where he was elected co-president of the Class of 2005. Mr. Loya received his undergraduate degree, as a double-major in Humanities and Spanish Literature, from the University of California, San Diego.

Venable was notified earlier in the month that Annette Kwok, of the firm’s Washington office, had also been chosen for the Lawyers of Color 2014 Hot List.

In making the announcement, Diversity co-chairs, Nora Garrote and Kathleen Hardway, noted that this was a significant honor for the firm.

The honorees were chosen through a two-pronged process. The selection committee spent months reviewing nominations and researching bar association publications and legal blogs in order to identify promising candidates. Nominations from mentors, peers, and colleagues were accepted. The selection committee also made editorial picks of attorneys who had noteworthy accomplishments, especially those active in legal pipeline initiatives.

Lawyers of Color was initially founded as On Being A Black Lawyer but now also produces publications for lawyers of South Asian American, Pacific Asian American, Hispanic, and Native American heritage. LOC has been recognized by the American Bar Association, National Black Law Students Association, and National Association of Black Journalists. Our company provides research, career development, and brand marketing opportunities to our clients. With a core readership of 35,000, nearly 200,000 unique blog visitors, and nearly 4,000 followers and fans, we have the largest social media presence of any minority legal organization.
