Experienced in a broad range of U.S. and European data privacy issues and heavily focused on contentious and non-contentious intellectual property

San Francisco, CA (March 7, 2017) – Venable LLP announced today that Shannon K. Yavorsky has joined the firm's national Privacy and Data Security and Intellectual Property practices as a partner in San Francisco. She joins Venable from Kirkland & Ellis LLP, where she was also a partner.

Ms. Yavorsky counsels clients on a broad range of U.S. and European data privacy issues, including cross-border data transfer, data breaches, and global privacy compliance. She has significant experience with European Commission standard contractual clauses, data privacy policies, website terms and data processing agreements, and advising clients on self-certifying to the EU-U.S. Privacy Shield. Her practice also places a heavy emphasis on contentious and non-contentious intellectual property and technology transactions work. She advises private equity firms, investment banks, and Fortune 500 companies on the IP and technology aspects of mergers and acquisitions, private equity investments, corporate reorganizations, and IP securitizations in a broad range of industry sectors, including software and hardware, fashion, retail, consumer goods, travel services, hospitality, manufacturing, and telecommunications.

"Our clients face a new reality when it comes to privacy concerns, and they are looking to us for the best approach to protect them and help them navigate these complex issues," said Stuart P. Ingis, Venable's Chairman and co-head of the firm's Privacy and Data Security practice. "With new privacy regulations taking effect in Europe next year, adding Shannon – who is licensed to practice law in Europe – is one of the steps we are taking to ensure that our practice remains well positioned to handle increasing client needs. Shannon has the necessary skills and experience to understand our clients' unique situations and provide them with the practical guidance they need to stay one step ahead of this ever-changing field."

Commenting on her move, Ms. Yavorsky said, "Venable's privacy and data security practice is among the most respected in the industry. With one of the deepest and most talented benches of professionals around, clients will benefit from a national team experienced in offering solutions to a wide range of complex issues. I'm excited to be joining such a dynamic team as it continues to grow and expand its presence to the Bay Area."

"Since opening over three years ago, Venable's San Francisco office has tripled in size through a measured and deliberate approach to growth," said James E. Nelson, Partner-in-Charge of the firm's San Francisco office. "Adding an attorney of Shannon's background and caliber was a natural step to strengthen the office's intellectual property and technology transactions practices and lay the foundation for us to expand the firm's data privacy practice to the Bay Area. The overlap between these practices is more vital now than ever for our Bay Area clients, and Shannon will be instrumental in bridging both. Plus, it provides even further linkage between our firm's potent policy skills in Washington, DC and technology expertise in the Bay Area in particular."

At Venable, Ms. Yavorsky joins a pioneering data privacy practice that is one of the deepest in the United States. Consistently recognized among the leading firms by Chambers USA and Legal 500, the group is a past winner of the Chambers USA Award for Excellence.

Ms. Yavorsky earned her Masters in Commercial Intellectual Property and a Postgraduate Diploma in Commercial Intellectual Property from Nottingham Law School in 2010 and 2008, respectively, graduating with distinction; a MPhil in Philosophy with honors from Trinity College in 1999; and a B.A. from The American University of Paris in 1997.
