Nationally recognized for work on climate change, natural resources, land use, and energy

Venable LLP announced today that William M. Sloan has joined the firm's Environmental practice as a partner in San Francisco. Mr. Sloan joins Venable from Morrison & Foerster LLP, where he was also a partner, served on the firm's Clean Technology and Alternative Energy Steering Committee, and chaired the Environment and Energy Group's carbon team.

Mr. Sloan represents domestic and international clients on regulatory and litigation issues related to development, natural resources, air quality and climate change, energy, land use, and endangered species. He advises clients on permitting, compliance strategies, risk management and project defense. On climate change, he has counseled clients on carbon trading and monetizing the environmental benefits of new technologies and processes. With respect to water, he is experienced with water rights, water supply assessments, groundwater basin adjudications, and water quality compliance.

"Bill's career has been devoted to emerging, cutting-edge issues involving federal and state environmental laws, and his arrival comes at a critical time for our clients," said Douglas H. Green, head of Venable's Environmental Law practice. "The new administration has signaled its intent to dramatically alter the course of the federal environmental landscape, including the relationship between EPA and state programs. These changes will come with their own opportunities and challenges for our clients, and Bill's experience with and knowledge of federal and state regulatory agencies and courts at all levels will deepen our national practice to help our clients across the country stay ahead of the curve."

Mr. Sloan has significant experience handling matters before regulatory agencies and in state, federal, and international courts. He has successfully litigated cases for the public and private sector that have been resolved in the California and United States Supreme Courts. Throughout his career, he also has extensive compliance, permitting, and litigation experience involving the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act, the Endangered Species Act, the California Environmental Quality Act, and other environmental statutes.

Added James E. Nelson, Partner-in-Charge of Venable's San Francisco office, "As we continue to grow in the Bay Area and across California, we are constantly looking for the practices and attorneys that build on and add to existing areas of strength across the firm. We believe building in those areas provides the biggest benefit to our clients. Adding someone of Bill's quality and experience in California, makes Venable all the more potent when it comes to environmental counseling and litigation. Particularly, because many California environmental issues take on a national profile and vice versa. Bill's arrival not only bolsters our national Environmental practice; it also lays a foundation for the expansion of another of Venable’s leading practices in San Francisco."

At Venable, Mr. Sloan joins an industry-leading Environmental practice providing counsel in a wide range of areas, including compliance counseling and enforcement defense, land use and the environmental issues associated with infrastructure development, federal and state environmental advocacy, and permitting. Chambers USA and U.S. News-Best Lawyers "Best Law Firms" consistently recognize the group and its attorneys among the top practices in the industry. The group frequently represents clients before federal and state agencies and in trial and appellate courts throughout the country.

"Venable's Environmental practice is highly repected for its Washington know-how, which provides a fantastic synergy and tremendous asset for my clients. No matter how complex an issue, the firm's attorneys approach every situation with the right amount of flexibility and nimbleness that clients expect and appreciate," said Mr. Sloan. "Likewise, Venable embraces a true entrepreneurial spirit that was a major draw for me. I am excited to have an opportunity to really build something, and expanding the firm’s Environmental practice into California is just that opportunity."

Mr. Sloan received his J.D. from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law, in 1999 and his B.A. from Princeton University in 1994. In 2006, he was awarded a diploma as a Rhodes Ocean Scholar from the Rhodes Academy of Oceans Law and Policy in Greece.
