On May 19, 2021, Belinda Vega, a co-chair of Venable’s West Coast Litigation Group, was recognized among the Daily Journal’s Top Women Lawyers of 2021. This prestigious award recognizes the top-performing women lawyers in California.
Ms. Vega focuses her practice on complex commercial litigation, including matters involving unfair business practices, securities litigation, contract disputes, and fraud. She also represents clients in wrongful death and collision cases. She has significant experience in all aspects of litigation, from discovery to depositions, trial, and appellate work. In addition, she has been actively involved in counseling clients on corporate compliance and conducts internal investigations in response to government inquiries and allegations of misconduct.
In November, Ms. Vega defeated a multi-million-dollar securities fraud and breach of contract action brought by a group of investors against her client, the owner of a Las Vegas hotel. She moved the case to arbitration, and then, through five motions for summary disposition, whittled it down from 10 claims for $135 million to one claim for $35 million. Three years after the lawsuit was filed, the arbitration panel dismissed the last remaining claim.
“It was a great experience in terms of how we can use alternative dispute resolution proceedings…and still be able to exercise our rights in terms of filing motions for summary judgment,” Ms. Vega told the Daily Journal.
