Claude Bailey and Lisa Tavares were recognized among Savoy’s 2022 Most Influential Black Lawyers. This comprehensive list features the best of the best Black lawyers who are top partners at leading national law firms and corporate counsel at Fortune 1000 companies.
Mr. Bailey, a partner in Venable’s State and Local Government Practice, represents private sector clients whose business interests require frequent interaction with District of Columbia government agencies. His work involves high-profile real estate development projects, zoning and land use, and local legislative and regulatory matters, among other cases. He draws from his rich experience as an attorney with the DC government to counsel major companies and nonprofit organizations on local legislative and regulatory issues. He is familiar with all members of the Council of the District of Columbia, along with many senior officials in the executive branch and DC’s independent agencies.
Ms. Tavares, a co-chair of Venable's Business Division, advises clients on Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA) and tax requirements applicable to retirement plans and non-qualified arrangements, health and welfare benefits, and fringe benefit arrangements. She represents government employers on Internal Revenue Code (IRC) and other benefit plan issues related to government plans. She regularly assists with government correction programs, such as the Employee Plans Compliance Resolution System (EPCRS), the Department of Labor (DOL) Voluntary Compliance Program (VCP), and the Voluntary Closing Agreement Program. Ms. Tavares also navigates issues related to mergers and acquisitions, including due diligence, plan mergers, terminations, transition planning, and employee relations.
