On September 3, Davis Hake was interviewed by The Recorder and quoted in the article “Innovation vs. Regulation Debate Reaches Gov. Gavin Newsom as AI Bills Hit His Desk.” The article focuses on SB 1047, a closely watched measure that would require the largest generative AI developers to ensure their products will not cause significant physical or financial harm.
SB 1047 by state Sen. Scott Wiener, D-San Francisco, secured passage in both legislative houses with solid backing from Democrats. In a statement, Wiener hailed the bill as “a light touch, common-sense measure that codifies commitments that the largest AI companies have already voluntarily made.”
“I think a lot of folks see 2025 as an opportunity to say, ‘OK, we’ve had a first go-round in 2024. Now, what can we do to start harmonizing some of these efforts?’” said Hake, senior director of cybersecurity services at Venable. “And hopefully this also helps put some wind in the sails of broader national-level efforts.”
