On October 17, 2024, the Baltimore Business Journal recognized the Venable Foundation, Inc. among its 2024 Corporate Philanthropy awardees and featured a profile on the foundation in which Bob Waldman highlighted its charitable giving in the Baltimore area for the coming year.
The Corporate Philanthropy awards recognize greater Baltimore’s most generous, community-minded, and innovative leaders and businesses that have made lasting contributions to the region. The foundation was recognized among 12 honorees for its charitable giving.
This year, the Venable Foundation is funding brain surgery research at the Johns Hopkins Hunterian Brain Tumor Laboratory. The foundation made a five-year commitment to grant $500,000 to the medical system’s neurosurgery department to support therapy option research for people with brain tumors. The money, awarded at $100,000 a year through 2028, will establish the Venable Fund for Neurosurgery Research.
“When two institutions like Venable and Hopkins come together, you can do really good things,” said Bob Waldman, president of the Venable Foundation.
Nationwide, last year, the Venable Foundation reached 394 nonprofit organizations through $3.8 million in financial donations. Of that, $1,059,500 went to 88 organizations in Baltimore. The Maryland Food Bank, Maryland Legal Aid, and Health Care for the Homeless received the largest grants. In addition to the grant to Hopkins this year, Venable also contributed $25,000 to the Maryland Tough Baltimore Strong Key Bridge Fund to help families and businesses affected by the collapse of the bridge this year.
“We owe a lot to this community for our success,” Waldman said. “With that comes a certain obligation to give back to the city. We’ve tried to do that.”
