Food Navigator Highlights Venable’s Insight on Ultra-Processed Foods

1 min

On August 8, Food Navigator featured insights from a recent client alert issued by Venable’s Food and Drug Law Group, focusing on the growing scrutiny of ultra-processed foods (UPFs).

According to the article, recent reports indicate a decline in the consumption of ultra-processed foods (UPFs). However, despite this downward trend, UPFs still account for more than half of the daily caloric intake for Americans, particularly among youth. These findings have prompted health leaders and policymakers to call for a redefinition of UPFs and a revision of current dietary guidelines.

In response, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and U.S. Department of Health and Human Services issued a Request for Information (RFI) to establish a standardized definition of UPFs.

In the client alert, attorneys advised food industry clients to participate in the process, stating that “engaging early in the process can help ensure that the final definition of UPFs is both practical for implementation and reflective of the production realities across the food sector.”
