On August 26, Law.com featured Matthew McLaughlin in a Q&A following his recognition by New York Law Journal as an Office Managing Partner of the Year Finalist. The following is an excerpt:
What are the traits necessary to lead a firm’s NY office?
Principally, patience. The lawyer's natural instinct is to be aggressive and proactive. But the race is not necessarily won by the swift. Too often, firms place all their emphasis on the limiting metrics of headcount, billable hours, and books of business. With those blinders on, firms fail to recognize that character, integrity, and personality are paramount when it comes to growth. Firms need to exercise good judgment and patience as they focus on growth, onboarding of new attorneys, and the retention of attorneys and business professionals.
In just a few words, how would you describe your leadership style?
Use as light a touch as possible and never lose your sense of humor—angels can fly because they take themselves lightly. Treat your partners like adults, give them a strong sense of autonomy, and then back away, giving them room to grow. I am a better managing partner when I place myself in the background when it comes to management and client-facing decisions. Trust people—they know how to serve clients.
