Boston, MA
Kevin Shepherd, chair of the ABA Task Force on Gatekeeper Regulation and the Profession, chaired a meeting of international bar leaders at the ABA Annual Meeting in Boston on August 9, 2014. The leaders included the top officers of the Law Council of Australia, the Japanese Federation of Bar Associations, the Law Society of England and Wales, and the Council of Bars and Law Societies of Europe (CCBE). Other meeting participants included academics, members of the ABA Task Force, and representatives of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel and the American College of Mortgage Attorneys.
The attendees discussed strategies to resist further governmental efforts to impose anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist financing obligations on the legal profession, and how best to advance educational efforts domestically and internationally, such as the development of a typologies report being prepared by the ABA, CCBE, and the International Bar Association that will be presented at the IBA annual meeting in Tokyo in October.
