Evolving Legal Trends for Employee and Student Handbooks

The employee and student/family handbooks are critical documents in establishing expectations. All too often, handbooks go overlooked and policies collect dust, despite important legal developments. This workshop will focus on commonly accepted policies and language, which must be revisited to best avoid liability. Among the topics covered are policies related to accommodations, social media, confidentiality, leave, and boundaries. We will review case studies, highlighting policies that courts have struck down as invalid, inappropriate, or overbroad. Practical guidance will be shared and participants will be challenged to analyze whether their handbooks are current and robust.
