Venable partner Janice Ryan presented “Nonprofit Lobbying and Political Activities” at the Nonprofit Legal, Finance, & Grants Conference on April 7, 2023.
Influencing public policy and elections can be an important tool for advancing nonprofits’ missions. In this session, participants learned about the federal tax rules for lobbying and political activities of 501(c)(3), 501(c)(4), and 501(c)(6) organizations; identified the lobbying disclosure and campaign finance laws that apply to these activities; and considered how to use affiliated tax-exempt organizations to engage in the full scope of advocacy activities available under the federal tax laws.
