Council of Engineering and Scientific Society Executives (CESSE)

Preparing for and Dealing with Internal, Criminal, Civil, Regulatory, and Congressional Investigations

Venable partner Ron Jacobs will present “Preparing for and Dealing with Internal, Criminal, Civil, Regulatory, and Congressional Investigations” at the ACESSE26 Conference, to be hosted by the Council of Engineering and Scientific Society Executives (CESSE) on July 14, 2026 in Raleigh, North Carolina.

This session will address the different kinds of investigations engineering and science societies may face. It will consider how they arise, how to manage them, and even how to prepare for them before they hit. From an employee incident that requires an internal investigation, to a letter from the chairman of a congressional oversight committee or a third-party subpoena in litigation between members, engineering and science societies face legal, reputational, and financial damage if they don’t know how to respond correctly.

Learning Objectives:

  • Attendees will understand the different kinds of investigations they may face and what each means for the association
  • Attendees will learn how to develop a plan for navigating the investigation and the resources that will be necessary
  • Attendees will consider different ways to prepare for investigations ahead of time, including with effective document management policies, review and refreshing policies and procedures, and developing a response plan before a crisis hits
