James Winn

James Winn practices intellectual property (IP) litigation with a focus on the technology industry. James is experienced in patent, trade secret, and other complex IP litigation, as well as inter partes review. He has also counseled clients on the prosecution, enforcement, patent litigation risk assessment, and licensing of IP rights. Prior to joining Venable, James served as a senior associate in the Chicago office of an international law firm, where he served as lead associate on complex technology patent cases, including development of case for trial and depositions of expert and fact witnesses.

James has advised clients on disputes across various industries, including computer software and hardware, telecommunications, semiconductor devices, data and image capture devices, cellular telephones, social media, banking, financial technologies, home smart devices, home security devices, video streaming technology, data encryption, medical devices, internet-based retailing, and oil field services.

James brings a background in engineering to the IP Litigation Group. After college, he worked as a building controls engineer at a manufacturing company focused on heating, ventilation, and air conditioning and refrigeration systems. He also served as a design engineer to a leading technology company prior to attending law school.
