An October 5 Associated Press story detailed the pro bono work of Venable partners Michael Schatzow and Mitchell Mirviss, along with students from the University of Maryland Law School, in a case challenging the way bail proceedings are conducted in Maryland.
The precedent-setting case challenged the long-standing practice in Maryland of conducting bail review hearing without giving defendants the benefit of legal representation. As a result of this practice, a large number of defendants faced immediate jail time, sometimes being incarcerated for days, until they could obtain counsel in order to set reasonable bail.
The ruling was also covered in The Baltimore Sun, The Daily Record, The Blog of the Legal Times, WJZ.com, Delmarvanow.com.
