Venable Co-Managing Partner Lindsay Meyer and partner Ashley Craig were quoted in the April 2012 issue of American Shipper on trade issues with China. Tensions between the United States and China have been more prominent through World Trade Organization disputes than currency valuation.
Meyer said the currency valuation issue remains the “elephant in the room,” but, “The targets have been individual issues and not currency issues, and there's been a tit-for-tat approach (from China).” Meyer added that aspects like zoning and countervailing duties are minor while issues of higher level relations “have largely been avoided.”
Noting that tough talk on China during a presidential election year tends to soften when a president comes into office, Craig said, “Not to belittle the current administration's effort with China, but I'm pretty confident in saying this approach is not that different than what the Bush administration had.”
