Warren Hamel was elected Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Chesapeake Bay Trust on May 3. The Chesapeake Bay Trust is the only nonprofit, grant-making organization dedicated to sparking on-the-ground change for the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries in Maryland. The Trust’s goal is to increase citizen stewardship of the Bay through grant programs, special initiatives, and partnerships that support environmental education, demonstration-based restoration, and community engagement activities.
The Trust receives approximately $4 million in contributions annually through the Maryland Chesapeake Bay license plate program and income-tax check-off programs, and reinvests those dollars through a variety of grant programs in community-led projects. Since its founding, the Trust has received over 10,000 grant requests and has awarded over $45 million to support environmental habitat restoration projects and education programs that have measurable positive impacts on the Chesapeake Bay. Trust projects touch more than 150,000 Marylanders annually in every county in Maryland and Baltimore City.
