On July 25, 2013, the Daily Record featured a front page article on the annual bocce tournament in Venable’s Baltimore office. The article focused on the championship game between summer associates Nick Rupkey and Nick Mongelluzzo of team One, Two — The Nicks Beat You and John West and Michael Garey, of team Second to None. After splitting the first two games, West and Garey won the third game to become the league’s only two-time champions. Partners Ted Evans and Kelly Weiner served as league commissioners.

“It’s great to interact with people you’ve never interacted with before,” said Evans. “People have been cooped up all winter long,” said Weiner. “It’s nice to get outside and be social. It’s fun, even the competition is fun.” Following their victory, West said, “We don’t like to lose.” Added Garey, “It’s nice to take time out of the day to play a game and meet different attorneys and different paralegals and other staff members at the firm.”

Evans and Weiner said no other event brings as many people in the office together as the bocce tournament. “We have found little that’s as effective at getting the firm together as this, that’s firm wide,” Evans said. “Everybody in every facet participates.” Evans also said he eventually hopes to bring the tournament south for the ultimate championship game against the winner of the Washington, DC office bocce tournament.
