Venable partner Larry Norton was quoted in the Houston Chronicle and San Antonio Express-News on August 15, 2015 about the role of super PACs in the 2016 presidential election. Many of the candidates running for president are also supported by an outside super PAC that, unlike the candidates themselves, can raise an unlimited amount of money from individual donors. While the activities of super PACs must remain independent of the candidate they support, they are able to help struggling candidates stay in the race longer.
According to Norton, the expanded role of super PACs was not anticipated in the ruling leading to their creation. "Without passing judgment about any one of them in particular, I think there is more comfort pushing the envelope for any number of reasons. One is that there has been little (FEC) enforcement or even investigations in this area," he said.
