NewsNation Features Kevin Lipson on Maine Lobsters Defamation Lawsuit

1 min

On March 20, 2023, Kevin Lipson shared his perspective with NewsNation on the ongoing defamation lawsuit filed against Monterey Bay Aquarium. Representing Maine lobster groups, Mr. Lipson speaks with correspondent Leland Vittert on the negative impact the industry is suffering as a result of the popular seafood item being deemed unacceptable for consumption by Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch program.

Seafood Watch labels ocean species and fishing industries based on their sustainability levels and practices and wields considerable influence over consumer behavior. The complaint states there has never been a Northern Right Whale death or injury attributable to Maine lobster fishing gear. Despite the absence of scientific or factual support, Monterey Bay Aquarium has given Maine lobster a "red " listing and has advised consumers to "avoid" buying Maine lobster. Several major purchasers of Maine lobster have stopped buying and selling lobster because of the red listing. As a result, the plaintiffs have suffered calculable financial and reputational harm arising from the defamation.

In addition to Mr. Lipson, the Venable team representing the Bean Maine Lobster Co, Maine Lobstermen’s Association, Maine Coast Fishermen's Association, Atwood's Lobster Co, and Gerry Cushman includes Ed BoyleDov Levavi, and Rose Farkish.
