This accomplishment is the result of Venable’s efforts to increase and sustain diversity, advance the inclusion of lawyers from historically underrepresented groups at all levels, and integrate diversity and inclusion across its business practices. The Plus recognition means that in addition to meeting or exceeding the baseline requirements, the firm has met the goal of at least 30 percent diverse lawyer representation in a notable number of its current leadership roles. In 2022, the firm first achieved Mansfield Rule Certification.

The goal of the Mansfield Rule is to boost the representation of lawyers from historically underrepresented groups in leadership roles at firms across the United States and Canada, which in turn creates more opportunities for talent at all levels. Participating law firms track and measure the extent to which they have affirmatively considered women, lawyers from underrepresented racial/ethnic groups, lawyers with disabilities, and LGBTQ+ lawyers for top leadership roles, senior-level lateral hiring, promotions into the equity partnership, and participation in client pitch meetings.
