On October 14, Jen Daskal commented in the Grand Forks Herald on a simulated drone threat exercise for local and state leaders. The following is an excerpt:

“This exercise is meant to spark ideas and discussion; there’s no winners or losers,” said Jennifer Daskal, a partner at Venable LLP, the law firm hosting the exercise. Daskal has previous experience as the deputy homeland security adviser at the White House and acting general counsel at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

The simulation was meant as an opportunity for local and state leaders to understand how a possible drone threat could impact a community like Grand Forks and raise awareness about counter-UAS technology.

Representatives from Venable said the results of the simulation will be compiled into a report that will be shared with national leaders in Congress and the White House, as well as more public audiences and other groups like relevant regulatory agencies. The report will also include Venable’s recommendations for any policy or funding issues or other relevant information that came up during the simulation.

“We have several goals here today, which is to highlight the nature of the threat; to assess the technology, structures, laws and regulations that are needed to effectively evaluate the threat; and particularly to identify relevant gaps,” Daskal said.
