2 min

Venable LLP’s Nicole N. King, was named the president of the Harriett Buhai Center for Family Law’s board of directors. The Buhai Center is a nonprofit serving low-income residents of Los Angeles County in need of legal assistance in child custody and visitation, child support, parentage, restraining orders, divorce, property division, and spousal support. Ms. King first served the nonprofit 16 years ago as a Trope and Trope fellow, following her 1L year at the USC Gould School of Law.

“Family law came naturally to me, because I myself was a child of divorce,” Ms. King said in a recent profile her alma mater shared highlighting her board elevation. “I wasn’t one of those kids who saw divorce as the end of the world. For me, it was a relief and brought peace at home. Divorce marked a new beginning, an opportunity to rebuild our family with stability, love and security. Legal advocacy in moments of family upheaval is powerful; it creates options, restores agency, and allows families to move forward with dignity.”

“The nonprofit legal aid organization commands a significant chunk of King’s attention in leading the board members, guiding governance, shaping strategy, and ensuring the Buhai Center stays aligned with its mission,” the profile continued. “In close partnership with executive director Stacy Horth-Neubert, King weighs in on major decisions, oversees fiduciary matters, and backs fundraising and external engagement efforts.”

Ms. King is a trial attorney who champions and advises her clients in complex commercial litigation disputes, including product liability, toxic torts, contract and business torts, labor and employment, and insurance recovery litigation. She has a strong track record of success for her clients while prosecuting and defending against civil lawsuits in state and federal courts. Ms. King’s victories include first-chairing a winning bench trial, in which she handled all aspects, including opening statement, direct examination, cross-examination, and closing argument.
