With increased attention focused on allegations and incidents of sexual misconduct by/between students, it is important for schools to be prepared to quickly and effectively respond to claims and to create practices that can limit the occurrence of such incidents. Challenges of this nature occur in all school settings, including boarding/non-boarding schools and same-sex institutions. This session reviews: how to respond when students are reluctant to come forward or have their identity known; procedures to follow for addressing claims, including the investigation, parent notification, documentation, discipline, practical remedies and emotional support; and issues associated with student privacy and counselors’ ethical obligations.
