The head of school agreement is important in clearly establishing the expectations and understandings of the parties. If carefully drafted it can serve as an important component of ensuring a successful relationship. This session described drafting head's contracts with a focus on maximizing the compensation and benefits provided to the head of school. The participants learned the benefits boards can provide that are attractive to the head and cost effective for the school. The session focused on the pitfalls to avoid and strategies to use when drafting language. The session reviewed housing, tuition benefits, club memberships, cleaning services and deferred compensation in a manner that maximizes remuneration. Time was spent on the range of strategies schools can use to incentivize and motivate the head of school to perform at his/her highest level and to remain at the school.
