On May 15, 2002, Richard L. Wasserman, chair of Venable's Bankruptcy and Creditors' Rights Group, filed his Examiner's Report in the Fas Mart Convenience Stores, Inc. Chapter 11 bankruptcy case in Richmond, Virginia. Mr. Wasserman had been appointed in January to serve as the Examiner to investigate and report on various allegations involving the owner and CEO of Fas Mart and various non-debtor related companies owned by the same individual.
Mr. Wasserman and a team of Venable attorneys, including Steve Leach, Darek Bushnaq and Brian O'Connor, worked together with a forensic accounting firm to complete a detailed investigation. At the conclusion of a hearing on May 3, which included an interim report by the Examiner, the Bankruptcy Court ordered the immediate appointment of a Chapter 11 Trustee in the Fas Mart cases.
Thereafter, on May 15, Mr. Wasserman filed his 67-page written report including a lengthy set of exhibits with the court. This case is another example of Venable's strong capabilities and experience in performing corporate investigations and analyses of complex business transactions.
