Six Venable Attorneys Selected as Maryland's Legal Elite

Venable LLP, Maryland’s largest law firm, is pleased to announce that six of its attorneys have been selected as Maryland’s “Legal Elite” by Baltimore SmartCEO Magazine. They are: Michael J. Baader, Gregory A. Cross, Todd J. Horn, Vicki Margolis, Charles J. Morton and Richard L. Wasserman.  

Baltimore SmartCEO selected a total 60 of Maryland’s attorneys as its “Legal Elite.” Attorneys were nominated by CEOs, business owners and industry and legal experts and then evaluated by area of expertise, leadership, professional accomplishments, innovation, and relationship development.

Mr. Baader, Partner-In-Charge of Venable’s Baltimoreoffice, has advised numerous companies in the region over the past two decades on financing, strategic alliances and M&A issues that are critical to their growth and success.  Mr. Baader has also advised many private equity and venture capital firms in their investments in companies in the region.  Mr. Baader concentrates on all aspects of corporate planning and business advisory services to corporate clients, with a focus on mergers and acquisitions, asset sales, joint ventures, venture capital investments, financing transactions and general corporate planning.  This is the second year Mr. Baader has been selected as Maryland's Legal Elite.

Mr. Cross is a partner in Venable’s Bankruptcy and Creditors’ Rights Group and represents creditors on a nationwide basis.  He has established national legal precedents recharacterizing financial instruments, defining the relationship of investors in securitized pools and restricting a Bankruptcy Court's ability to sell property in the face of a creditor's objections.  On behalf of debtors, Mr. Cross has restructured debt obligation as large as $2 billion and has confirmed one of Maryland 's larger plans of reorganization.    

For more than 18 years, Mr. Horn has counseled and represented businesses in all types of employment matters in the Baltimore-Washington, D.C. area.  He recently served as defense counsel in one of the largest employment discrimination class action lawsuits in history and is widely recognized for his extensive experience in litigation involving discrimination, sex harassment, compensation, defamation, ERISA and wrongful discharge.  Mr. Horn is the co-author with Stanley Mazaroff of the book Maryland Employment Law, which has been cited on multiple occasions by the Maryland State and Federal Courts and is regarded as the principal publication in its field.

Ms. Margolis is chair of the firm’s Patent Litigation Group and was recognized as one of "Maryland's Top 100 Women" by the Daily Record and Baltimore Business Journal's "40 Under 40."  Ms. Margolis handles all types of technology litigation for national clients in industries ranging from pharmaceutical, biotech, financial, to consumer products, and works with them on their global IP licensing and enforcement strategies.  Ms. Margolis is also a member of the Character Committee of the Court of Appeals of Marylandfor the Sixth Appellate Court, where she reviews and mentors applicants who are applying for the Maryland State Bar.

Mr. Morton is the Chair of the Mezzanine Finance Practice Group at Venable, and has been practicing in the field of business transactions, mergers and acquisitions, technology transactions, and mezzanine finance for more than 15 years.  He recently closed a $165 million sale of an electronics business to a Fortune 100 company and was noted as "one of the best lawyers in Baltimore when it comes to advising entrepreneurial firms" by the Baltimore Business Journal.  This is the second year Mr. Morton has been selected for this honor.

Mr. Wasserman is the senior partner in Venable’s Bankruptcy and Creditors’ Rights Group and concentrates his practice in matters involving bankruptcy and bankruptcy-related litigation, creditors’ rights, secured transactions, workouts, complex Chapter 11 reorganizations and restructurings.  Mr. Wasserman is a Fellow in the American College of Bankruptcy, a past President of the Bankruptcy Bar Association for the District of Maryland and has served as a trustee, examiner and counsel in significant national and regional bankruptcy cases.  This is the second year Mr. Wasserman has been selected as Maryland's Legal Elite.
