Venable partner Kevin Shepherd was quoted in a June 14, 2012 Afro American article on his memories of former Maryland Court of Appeals Judge Harry A. Cole. Judge Cole, who died in 1999, was the first African American in Maryland to serve on the state’s appeals court, be elected to the state senate, and serve as assistant attorney general. At a June 6 event, the Library Company of the Baltimore Bar honored Judge Cole’s life and career.

Speaking about his memories of Judge Cole, Shepherd said, “He lived, worked, and espoused the importance of integrity and that's what I remember about him most 25 years later.” Shepherd, who clerked for Judge Cole from 1984 to 1985, added, “I have very fond memories of spending a year after law school working with Judge Cole on a day-to-day basis. It was a fantastic experience to work closely with a highly respected judge in the State's highest court.”
