Handles cross-border deals for domestic and European companies; formerly based in Paris and Milan; Mr. Sternberg adds to Venable's strong international platform

New York - February 9, 2015 – In a noteworthy addition to its Corporate Practice, particularly for international deals, Venable LLP announced that Peter R. Sternberg, who handles domestic and cross-border transactions in a wide variety of industries, has joined the firm as partner in the New York office.

Mr. Sternberg, previously a corporate partner with Orrick Herrington & Sutcliffe, advises on international mergers, acquisitions, joint ventures and other transactions. Formerly based in New York, Paris and Milan, and fluent in both French and Italian, he has extensive experience working with European and US clients, particularly industrial and technology companies.

In addition to his transactional work, Mr. Sternberg has provided general corporate counsel advice, as well as managing multi-jurisdictional disputes and assisting in adapting non-U.S. export control and anti-money laundering compliance programs to U.S. laws having extra-territorial application.

"I have known Peter for over a decade and have been highly impressed by the scope and excellence of his international transactional work. He has been regularly brought in to handle challenging cross-border deals with many moving parts. I expect that he will be a great fit for our corporate team," said Venable New York corporate partner Mark S. Vecchio, who regularly advises on cross-border work.

Venable has a significant international platform, including a long history of working with global companies on cross-border issues, including litigation and crisis representation in the U.S. The firm is particularly known for its extensive regulatory practices, providing 360 degree solutions to complex business challenges in both regulated and unregulated environments. Venable represents a wide range of leading national and international corporations, emerging growth companies and entrepreneurs in all aspects of their business operations.

Attorneys at Venable are recognized leaders in many areas, including regulatory compliance and investigations, brand protection, product liability litigation, complex commercial and financial transactions, real estate, labor & employment, financial services litigation and restructuring. Venable frequently represents foreign governments in highly sensitive investigations and government affairs matters.

"Venable is among a select few U.S. law firms that have substantial international work without the need to maintain foreign offices," Mr. Sternberg said. "In fact, that can be a benefit for clients in being able to partner with lawyers internationally who are best suited to address a specific matter. Venable's international client base and the outstanding breadth of its transactional, IP and regulatory practices are a great fit with my work."

Mr. Sternberg noted that Venable's government affairs experience could be a particular benefit to his clients. "International companies are increasingly challenged in complying with far-reaching regulatory oversight including the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act and the Office of Foreign Asset Control," Mr. Sternberg said. "The growing extraterritoriality of U.S. law has made having access to top attorneys handling regulatory enforcement issues a must for cross-border transactions."

Mr. Sternberg received his J.D. from New York University School of Law and his B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania.
