Venable partner Justin Pierce was interviewed in a July 20, 2015 World Trademark Review podcast on 3D printing. With prices falling and technology improving, there has been a lot of discussion in the IP world about the benefits and possible negatives of 3D printing technology.
With the technology improving, Pierce said 3D printing technology is not at a point where companies could mass produce a product faster than traditional manufacturing. Pierce advised companies and industries engaged in 3D printing who are concerned about IP rights to look beyond a strategy of policing and focus on a strategy of engagement, interaction and providing an alternative for legal or at least distribution or allowing people to express themselves in a way that is licensed and easy to do.
