First Venable attorney to serve on ABA Board of Governors
Baltimore, MD — February 23, 2016 — Venable is pleased to announce that real estate partner Kevin L. Shepherd has been elected to the American Bar Association's (ABA) Board of Governors. Mr. Shepherd, who will serve a three-year term, is the first Venable attorney to be elected to the Board of Governors.
Comprising 38 members, the Board of Governors has the authority to act and speak for the ABA, consistent with previous action of the House of Delegates, when the House is not in session. The Board usually meets four times a year, oversees the general operation of the ABA, and develops specific plans of action.
A senior partner in Venable's nationally recognized real estate practice, Mr. Shepherd represents large national and multinational institutions in complex real estate transactions, ranging from the development of the world headquarters of a multinational biotechnology and life science firm to the purchase and sale of the nation's highest-profile assets. Mr. Shepherd's work has brought him numerous recognitions from clients and peers throughout his career. For the past decade, Chambers USA has recognized him as a Band 1 attorney for Real Estate in Maryland, and he was recently named the Baltimore Real Estate Lawyer of the Year by The Best Lawyers in America.
Mr. Shepherd holds significant leadership positions in Venable and law-related organizations. He is Managing Director of Finance and chair of Venable's Finance Committee, and previously served as chair of the firm's Real Estate Practice Group for a dozen years. Mr. Shepherd is a past chair of the ABA Section of Real Property, Trust and Estate Law (Section), and a past president of the American College of Real Estate Lawyers, the country's most prestigious honorary organization for practicing real estate attorneys. A recognized authority on the legal profession’s obligation to detect and combat money laundering and terrorist financing, Mr. Shepherd chairs the Section's Working Group on Anti-Money Laundering/Counter-Terrorist Financing Efforts Affecting Lawyers. He is a member of the American Bar Foundation's Fellows Research Advisory Committee and a member of the American College of Mortgage Attorneys.
The American Bar Association is one of the world's largest professional organizations, with nearly 400,000 members and more than 3,500 entities. Founded in 1878, the ABA is committed to supporting the legal profession with practical resources for legal professionals while improving the administration of justice, accrediting law schools, and establishing model ethical codes.
