Venable partner Mike Bresnick was quoted in an April 27, 2016 Wall Street Journal article on the departure of Jennifer Shasky Calvery, director of the U.S. Treasury Department's Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN). During her four years as director, Calvery's tenure was noted for expanded enforcement and private-sector engagement.
"There's not a financial institution out there that's not concerned about FinCEN," said Bresnick. He added that Calvery "brought a prosecutorial mindset to the agency, which pushed into new areas of enforcement by targeting card clubs and beginning the process of tracing money laundering in real estate. She shepherded to its final stages a proposal to mandate banks to identify beneficial owners of companies opening accounts, an issue thrust into the spotlight in the wake of the Panama Papers scandal."
