Energy Intelligence Quotes Mike Bloomquist on Biden’s Pledge to Rejoin Paris Agreement

On December 14, 2020, Mike Bloomquist was quoted in Energy Intelligence on President-elect Joe Biden’s pledge to immediately take steps to reenter the 2015 Paris climate accord.

According to the article, reentering the Paris Agreement is easy for a Biden administration. The reentry process takes about 30 days, per UN policy, does not require congressional signoff, and is not expected to use much, if any, political capital. “I think they would move very fast” on international climate engagement, Bloomquist told Energy Intelligence.

Bloomquist added that having a cabinet stocked with Clinton- and Obama-era policy hands who could hit the ground running in the international climate space will help in that arena. For example, last month the Biden transition team named John Kerry, former U.S. Secretary of State during the Obama administration and one of the key architects of Obama's Paris pledge, as the National Security Council special envoy for climate.
