States have been active in recent years in passing marketing and privacy laws. This is particular the case in California. They have laws covering issues like Identity Theft, online privacy, and health information. The new California Information-Sharing Disclosure Law -- also known as the "Shine the Light" law -- passed at the beginning of this year. This law requires businesses and non-profits to designate a contact point for privacy inquiries by California customers about data sharing with third parties. Security breach laws have passed in more than 20 states Certainly some of these laws are controversial. They require a great deal of corporate compliance and have implications for consumers and businesses in not only the states where they are enacted, but nationwide. Topics covered include compliance and lobbying these laws and the dynamic between state law, federal laws, and preemption in these areas.
