Venable is a proud sponsor of the Colorado American Inn of Court meeting on November 21, where partners Elizabeth Manno and Emily Keimig and counsel Tara Bailes will be speaking. The meeting will be presented in a format based on ABC’s show Shark Tank and will feature a panel of potential investors (the “sharks”) and three teams of entrepreneurs. The entrepreneurs (CO IP AIC student members) will pitch their company or product. And the potential investors, a distinguished group of intellectual property lawyers (both in-house and private practice) and the managing director of Venture Partners at CU Boulder, must decide whether to invest. As in the show, the sharks will consider weaknesses and potential pitfalls in the entrepreneurs’ product or company. The panel will focus on intellectual property red flags that could be show-stoppers in venture capital or mergers and acquisitions diligence, including issues related to fair use, substantial similarity, trade secrets, patent monopolies, licensing, the spectrum of distinctiveness, and AI-generated outputs.
