In his 1992 sci-fi thriller "Snow Crash," author Neal Stephenson allowed his characters to escape from a dystopian Los Angeles into a completely virtual realm he called the metaverse. Thirty years later, Stephenson's then-fanciful metaverse is approaching reality, with the development of technologies like virtual and augmented reality, cryptocurrency, non-fungible tokens and other digital technologies that companies are using to create a fully immersive, distributed internet — often called the metaverse or Web3.
