Competition in the airline industry works, to the great benefit of consumers, both as to cost and options. Furthermore, our commercial aviation system is both remarkably safe and, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, the safest in its history. The last fatal commercial airline crash in the U.S. was in 2009. Safety has not and should not be deregulated.
Thus, it is perplexing that over the last four years, the U.S. Departments of Transportation and Justice have become ever more intrusive in ways that, in the aggregate, recall the pre-1978 heavy hand of economic regulation.
