John Walsh

John Walsh represents institutional developers, nonprofit and educational organizations, and other owners and operators of real property assets. John drafts and negotiates all manner of agreements related to the construction, development, repositioning, maintenance, and ongoing operations of real property assets. He also advises clients with respect to the prevention and resolution of a broad array of related issues, claims, and disputes.

John has wide-ranging experience representing clients in connection with commercial office, hospitality, industrial, infrastructure, cultural, retail, life sciences, educational, and mixed-use projects, ranging from retail and commercial interior fit-outs to complex, skyline-altering multi-tower developments. John also represents high-net-worth individuals in connection with the construction and renovation of single-family residences.

John regularly drafts, reviews, and negotiates all agreements required to take any construction or renovation project from inception to final completion. This includes owner-contractor agreements, agreements with the key members of the project's design team (including architects and engineers), and agreements with non-professional consultants, in addition to related lease, development, and loan agreements. John also drafts and negotiates agreements related to the ongoing operation of real property assets, including property management agreements and maintenance and repair agreements with service providers. He assists clients with managing multi-year, large-scale renovations of operating resorts and other large-scale hospitality assets, including pursuant to multi-stage property improvement plans.

John also counsels clients with respect to disputes regarding defective work, non-performance, contract renewal, disputed payment claims, cost escalations, project delays, and similar issues.


Representative Matters

  • Represented an agency of the City of New York in connection with the repositioning and development of a large, underutilized, mixed-use site
  • Acting as outside general counsel for all construction and ongoing operations matters for a major historic arts and cultural institution in midtown Manhattan
  • Represented a major quasi-governmental transportation agency in connection with the redevelopment of a major transportation hub in midtown Manhattan, including a variety of construction and logistical matters related to the completion of work and the commencement of operations
  • Represented a landmark private educational institution in Westchester County, New York in connection with several major capital improvement projects
  • Represented the developer of several hundred acres of former industrial space in connection with design and construction agreements to reposition the site in warehouse and point-of-destination logistics facilities
  • Represented an institutional owner/operator of 600+ boutique hotels throughout the United States in connection with all manner of construction, renovation, and repositioning projects
  • Represented the owner of a world-renowned landmark hotel located in midtown Manhattan in connection with the major renovation and upgrade of all rooms and amenities (including the preservation of historically significant artifacts and elements of the property), and partial conversion to luxury for-sale residential condominiums
